Introduction: frequently asked questions

What is the hallmark of Prospect House School?

Prospect House School is above all a happy school. We believe that only if a child is happy and actively wants to come to school will his or her potential in the widest sense be maximised. Within a friendly but nevertheless structured academic environment, the school aims to bring out the best in its children. Results in the entrance examinations to the leading senior schools both in London and the country have consistently been excellent.

Why is Prospect House so successful?

This is mainly because the school enjoys such a happy yet purposeful atmosphere. However, this can only be achieved because the school does not stint to obtain the very best staff and supports them with the very best in resources.

Is there an entrance test?

No - we are non-selective and do not test for entry into the Nursery or Reception classes. However, parents are expected to indicate to the school any difficulties which may affect their child's academic performance. For children seeking an occasional place at the school at age 5 or above, the school makes an assessment to determine the child's attainment, particularly in mathematics and literacy. A place will be offered if the results of these assessments demonstrate that the child will be happy and successful in the year group. All admissions are subject to the school's registration and entry procedures and are at the headmistress's discretion.

How do we know if Prospect House School is right for our child?

It is essential you visit any school you are considering for your child. If you choose to visit Prospect House you will be made most welcome. You will be able to meet the headmistress, see the children at work and play and, vitally, gauge the atmosphere.

Prospect House is a preparatory school, which boys and girls enter in the Nursery, aged 3, or Reception, aged 4, and leave for their senior schools at 11 years. Pupils are prepared at 11+ for a wide range of the leading London day schools and for boarding schools.

Prospect House is not a pre-preparatory school and does not prepare children for 7+ or 8+ entry to other schools.

You may find it useful to talk to your friends and other people about the schools you are considering. Prospect House, and its sister schools, Orchard House in Chiswick and Bassett House in Kensington, enjoy an excellent reputation with parents. All three schools are well known by the senior schools they serve and maintain regular contact to ensure a smooth transition for the children. We are proud of the reputation of all three schools.

How do we arrange to visit the school?

There are regular open mornings at which the headmistress, Mrs Dianne Barratt, shows the school to prospective parents. These visits afford a perfect opportunity to ask her - or the children - all the questions that may occur to you, and to talk to the Upper School pupils who help show you round.

Visits may be arranged through the school office by telephoning +44 (0)20 8780 0456 or by emailing info@prospecths.org.uk.

Can we register our child before visiting the school?

No, we feel it is vitally important that you visit the school first. (The school will accept registration in advance of a visit only in exceptional circumstances.)
