Eight of our very keen Year 5 maths enthusiasts made their way by train to Christ’s Hospital in Horsham recently to take part in an exciting maths challenge. We were very pleased and proud that two of our Prospect House pairs finished in first and third position overall, out of fifteen attending schools.
The competition format was designed for teams to work in pairs. The problems included challenging number calculation tasks which required the children to methodically employ their mental maths skills. There were a number of spatial challenges that allowed the children to make great use of the spatial visualisation skills, which they have worked hard to develop and exercise over the past number of years. There was also a very large problem solving element throughout and communication between pairs was, no doubt, a very important factor throughout the challenge.
All eight of the children acquitted themselves in exemplary fashion demonstrating impressive ambition, effort, focus and manners. Afterwards the team all agreed that they were already looking forward to making the most of further competitive maths opportunities, many of which are already in the pipeline. The exhilarating mathematical adventure of discovery continues in earnest!
