Throughout this year, the children in the gardening club have spent a busy time creating new planting areas in the school playground. As the weather gets better, the garden will hopefully be a riot of colour. They have learnt how to care for plants, sowed seeds and investigated what is needed to create a garden. They are focusing on planting drought-tolerant plants to try to conserve water but also plants that attract insects to help pollinate. The children have planted potatoes and strawberries, with cucumbers and sweetcorn to follow, and have the beginnings of a herb garden that will be used in the school kitchen. Watch this space for a sweet pea teepee … a cosy colourful corner of the playground where children can sit and read quietly surrounded by colour and wonderful fragrance.
